Antonio Conte has warned Chelsea chiefs that he will take a year-long sabbatical if he’s sacked this summer – to get the most compensation possible from the club. Despite winning the Premier League and the FA Cup in his two seasons, the Italian is widely expected to be dismissed from his role.
The relationship with the club’s board soured after a row over last summer’s transfer policy and it’s appeared clear that he would leave for some time. Chelsea were unwilling to sack him sooner due to fears over another colossal compensation bill, but they face a £9m payout anyway with Conte seriously considering taking a 12-month break from the game, according to the Times.
Antonio Conte will continue to be paid his monthly salary for 12 months until he takes another job if he is resigned and is now only willing to accept an extremely attractive offer as he bides his time. This situation is nothing new for the Premier League side, who were forced to pay Roberto Di Matteo for two years after his sacking in 2012, though they have since capped their compensation terms to just one year.
